The slot is the ideal option for wide receivers who are quick, as they can open up more easily when their route won't be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list that benefits from more slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable receiver on intermediate and short routes.
The bottom of the list includes more possession-based receivers who perform better on intermediate and short routes than deep ones like Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler. Jeudy is a good choice for a sleeper this year since the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to be involved in more downfield targets. Hamler will thrive on more short-to-middle and intermediate routes, because this is where he was at his best when playing for the Bills in 2021. Hamler could be a fantastic replacement for departed wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.
Percentage of Snaps In Slot
The percentage of snaps a receiver plays in the slot is a good indicator of their ability to run deep routes. It is not always a reliable indicator of a receiver’s skill set because certain receivers excel in the slot, but they can't play further.
Alshon Jeffrey, for instance, leads the league in targets received per game (4.8), but is only 6th in slot receiving scores (58.5). This is due to the fact that the majority of his targets are from outside and it's difficult to make a first down on an open, deep route.
On the other hand, certain receivers excel at playing inside and can't do much on the perimeter. Robby Anderson, for example was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He completed 74% of his routes in the slot, compared to only 26% of his boundaries routes. That's a huge difference, and indicates how much more efficient the player is when positioned in the slot.
Furthermore, the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs and has a top five slot receiving score (58.5). He also ran 51% of his perimeter routes and is a pro in one-on-1 coverage.
Speed receivers are usually more effective when lining up inside, as they are able to be targeted down the field, and often find themselves with one-on-one coverage. That's why you'll see names like Julio Jones, Mike Evans and Amari Cooper on the top five spots of our list.
McDuffie, Moore and other slot cornerbacks are also in this group. McDuffie leads the NFL in forced fumbles, with seven, while Moore has the highest tackle-stop efficiency (-3.5) on this list. Spagnuolo increased McDuffie's capabilities by putting him in the slot for nickel and dime packages and then shifting him to the outside when playing base defense. Moore's ability to stop big run plays is an enormous benefit when playing the slot.
Percentage of Snaps Outside
While the NFL's top receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also worth noting that their slot counterparts are just as excellent. As a whole wide receivers who have a high slot receiver grade score touchdowns at roughly the same rate as players who play on the perimeter. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent with their target distribution when they throw to outside and slot wide receivers, as opposed to other inside options like backfield passers and tight ends.
It's therefore fascinating to see a player such as CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets, and flanker in 2 of them. In actuality, he's running a higher number of routes in the slot than most players listed on this chart. This is a great way to create matchup benefits for your team and to explain why Lamb is rated as the top-rated slot receiver in our system this season.
Of course, he plays the X position and makes big plays from the perimeter too. Lamb isn't as explosive as the other players in this ranking but he's an elite wide receiver who is well-suited to the Cowboys scheme.
Mecole Hardman, another player who puts huge numbers with targets of both kinds, is a further example. He has a very high slot receiving grade and is among the league's best at catching back-shoulder throws but he's also an excellent opponent for contested catch.
Another player on this list that's a true slot specialist is Baltimore's Jalen Hilton, who has lined up in the slot on 85.7 percent of his defensive plays this season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best run stop EPA for cornerbacks that are aligned in the slot, which makes him an important player in the defense of his team. On the other hand, he's struggled to block passes from the outside and has given an unfavorable EPA against these types of targets. This is because he's been playing with linebackers and safety who can't compete with Hilton's speed, size and ability to run routes.![]()
